Analysis Of Citizen Kane Essays - English-language Films

Analysis Of Citizen Kane Essays - English-language Films Analysis Of Citizen Kane The classic masterpiece, Citizen Kane (1941), is probably the world's most famous and highly rated film, with its many remarkable scenes, cinematic and narrative techniques and innovations. The director, star, and producer were all the same individual - Orson Welles (in his film debut at age 25), who collaborated with Herman J. Mankiewicz on the script and with Gregg Toland as cinematographer. Within the maze of its own aesthetic, Citizen Kane develops two interesting themes. The first concerns the debasement of the private personality of the public figure, and the second deals with the crushing weight of materialism. Taken together, these two themes comprise the bitter irony of an American success story that ends in futile nostalgia, loneliness, and death. The fact that the personal theme is developed verbally through the characters while the materialistic theme is developed visually, creating a distinctive stylistic counterpoint. It is against the counterpoint that the themes unfol d within the structure of a mystery story. Its theme is told from several perspectives by several different characters and is thought provoking. The tragic story is how a millionaire newspaperman, who idealistically made his reputation as the champion of the underprivileged, becomes corrupted by a lust for wealth, power and immortality. Kane's tragedy lies in his inability to experience any real emotion in his human relationships. The apparent intellectual superficiality of Citizen Kane can be traced to the shallow quality of Kane himself. Even when Kane is seen as a crusading journalist battling for the lower classes, overtones of self-idolatry mar his actions. His clever ironies are more those of the exhibitionist than the crusader. His second wife complains that Kane never gave her anything that was part of him, only material possessions that he might give a dog. His best friend, Jedediah Leland, was a detached observer functioning as a sublimated conscience remarks to the reporter that Kane never gave anything away: he le ft you a tip. In each case, Kane's character is described in materialistic terms. What Kane wanted - love, emotional loyalty, the unspoiled world of his boyhood, symbolized by rosebud, he was unable to provide for those around him, or buy for himself. The intriguing opening is filled with hypnotic dissolves from one sinister, mysterious image to the next, moving forward closer and closer. The film's first sight is a No Trespassing sign hanging on a giant gate in the night's foggy mist, illuminated by the moonlight. The camera pans up the chain-link mesh gate, which dissolves and changes into images of great iron flowers or oak leaves on the heavy gate. On the crest of the gate is a single, silhouetted, wrought iron K initial. The gate surrounds a distant, forbidding-looking castle with towers. The fairy-tale castle is situated on a man-made mountain, obviously the estate of a wealthy man. The same shots are repeated in reverse at the very end of the film. The initial and concluding clash of realism and expressionism suggests in a subtle way, the theme of Citizen Kane. The intense material reality of the fence dissolves into the fantastic unreality of the castle, and in the end, the mystic pretension of the castle dissolves into th e mundane substance of the fence. Matter has come full circle from its original quality to the grotesque baroque of its excess. As each flashback unfolds, the visual scenario of Citizen Kane orchestrates the dialogue. A universe of ceilings dwarfs Kane's personal stature. He becomes the prisoner of his possessions, the ornament of his furnishings, and the fiscal instrument of his collections. His booming voice is muffled by walls, carpets, furniture, hallways, stairs the vast recesses of useless space. Gregg Toland's camera set-ups are designed to frame characters in the oblique angles of light and shadow created by their artificial environment. There are no luminous close-ups in which faces are detached from their backgrounds. When characters move across rooms, the floors and ceilings move with them. This technique which is highly unusual, tends to dehumanize characters by reducing them to fixed ornaments in a shifting architecture. The choice of camera position was an important factor in getting across artistic and psychological effects. To the photograph a person or object from below, distorts that object. It tends

Looking At The Us Foster Care System Social Work Essay Essay Example

Looking At The Us Foster Care System Social Work Essay Essay Example Looking At The Us Foster Care System Social Work Essay Essay Looking At The Us Foster Care System Social Work Essay Essay Foster attention system in United States has been at that place for a long clip although the modes of when it was started are really much different from todays or current 1s. During the twelvemonth 1853 a curate ( Charles Loring Brace ) from New York started the free Foster place motion. He was propelled by a big figure of immigrant kids who were without places nutrient or shelter. The curate advertised the demand for the households to volitionally and whole heartedly provide these kids with free nutrient and shelter. Get downing early 1900 s the authorities bureaus began to supervise and even oversee Foster parents. This brought an terminal to the arrangement of a kid with any willing household. The acceptance and safe households act of 1997 is perceived to hold made the most important alterations to the kids public assistance commissariats since 1980 ( Foster-care.adoptionblogs.com 1 ) . How the United States foster attention system plants The current Foster attention system in the United States is the Adoption and Safe Families Act ( ASFA ) which was signed by Former president Bill Clinton. Its chief aims was to turn to the issue of long continuances of Foster attention, prejudice towards household saving at the disbursal of kids s safety and good being and unequal attending and resources devoted to acceptance. One of the cardinal commissariats was to guarantee that kid safety, permanence and good being are of a paramount concern in any kid s public assistance determination. Another proviso was to promote provinces to hasten permanence determinations for kids in Foster attention at the same clip promoting and even increasing the figure of acceptances specifically through a new acceptance incentive payment plan. Another proviso was the constitution of criterions and a province of answerability system whereby provinces face fiscal punishments for failure to show betterments in kid s result and besides promote provinces to prove advanced attacks to presenting kid attention services by spread outing the bing release plan. To further its publicity to safe and stable households, the authorities financess for time-limited household reunion service. It besides financess acceptance publicity and support activities. It besides financess the striplings who are doing the passage from foster attention to self sufficiency and former Foster young person up to the age of 21. The support assists the young persons both financially and besides in lodging aid. The fund besides assists the young persons or striplings in footings of guidance and other support services needed to assist in going independent. The Foster system has besides some educational and vocational plans for the older young person go forthing the Foster attention. The Foster attention system in the United States besides provides Medicaid coverage to some of the former Foster young persons. Through the tribunals, United States Foster Care systems be sides guarantee that there is a decrease of backlog of maltreatment and disregard of attention. Through the tribunals, it besides ensures it expedites the flow of single instances by automatizing the instance -tracking or data- aggregation systems. This is made possible because SANCA provides comparatively little grants to tribunals so that they can fund their undertaking so as to accomplish the specified ends. The Foster system in United States besides ensures that there is no detaining or denying of acceptance and Foster attention arrangements on footing of race or ethnicity. This is because it requires the provinces to enroll prospective adaptive and even foster attention households from cultural and racial backgrounds so that there can be a contemplation of the diverseness among kids necessitating replacing ( Murray and Gesiriech 1 ) . Why the Foster attention root has failed to supply services to the kids. The United States Foster system has been faulted for its failure to supply the kids with the services they need. Many critics say that this inadequacy in services can be attributed to a dramatic addition in the figure of kids placed in surrogate attention during the 1990 s which was as a consequence of alterations in federal policies and Torahs sing to the coverage of and step ining in instances of kid maltreatment and disregard. Again, the Foster attention system is under examination because of the conscienceless conditions that the kids faced after being removed from their households which included the separation from siblings and being placed in places that were badly equipped to pull off their single demands. Critics besides argue that many kids take more clip at surrogate places while waiting for acceptance or lasting arrangement. For case ASFA reduced the sum of clip a kid may stay in the Foster attention without a hearing to turn to his or her deficiency of a lasting arrangeme nt from 18- 12 months. It besides made a judicial admission whereby it required all the provinces to register for expiration of parental rights whenever a kid below 10 old ages has spent 15 of the 22 months in surrogate attention. This is nevertheless non followed because it is estimated that around 33 % of kids stay in the Foster attention for 8 months up to 4 old ages and even 16 % stay 5 old ages or more. It is besides estimated that in the twelvemonth 2004, 518,000 kids were populating in surrogate acre and merely approximately 23 per centum were shacking with relations while the remainder were shacking with people either in household or group place puting whom they did nt cognize prior to arrangement ( Flemons 1 ) . The American Foster attention system could non supply services expeditiously to keep the kids s rights. For illustration it is the responsibility of the Foster attention system to guarantee that no kids travel into the system without proper grounds of disregard yet many kids find themselves in arrangement places yet they were under no immediate dangers and they could hold been left safely in the custodies of their parents. One of the major grounds as to why the United States foster attention system ca nt expeditiously supply the demands of the surrogate kids is because of the federal fiscal inducements. This is because federal financess meant for the care of kids in Foster attention have been historically limitless but monies that could hold been used in supplying in-home services have been appropriated at the degrees which are far below that which is authorized by the Congress. Many of the financess which are appropriated by the provinces for in-home services have been historically diverted to further attention. The deficiency of sufficient financess has besides created unemployment. For illustration you will happen that most of the young persons who have aged out of the Foster attention have bee involved in improper Acts of the Apostless.it is estimated that 60 % of the work forces have been convicted of a offense and around 75 % of the adult females have received public aid. We all know that offense is propelled by poorness due to increased degrees of unemployment. Lack of adequate federal support to the Foster acre system has besides contributed vastly to the unemployment of the aged out surrogate young person because many of them could nt entree continued instruction which is critical for 1s calling and employment. Statisticss indicate that merely 6 % of those who were surveyed had finished a two or even for-year grade by the age of 24 and that about 25 per centum did non hold a high school sheepskin. It is besides estimated that merely 48 per centum of th e young person aged out of Foster were working compared to 72 % of those who did non go through through the Foster attention system. It is besides said that they merely worked for an one-year pay of $ 8,000 when their counter parts were acquiring double of this or even more. Many of the young person who aged out of the societal attention system have other jobs which the system has failed to supply. For illustration statistics indicate that around 40 per centum of them had been stateless since go forthing the Foster attention system. It is the responsibility of the Foster attention system to guarantee that they assist all the surrogate kids until they get independent. Again the Foster system has non ensured that the kids are acquiring the best in everything including the necessary accomplishments in life through instruction and that is why many are vulnerable because they can non supply for themselves ( Irp.wisc.edu 01 ) . Conclusion Most of the immature people are taken off from their households because it is believed that the society can make better in rearing them. The Foster attention system has committed to helping the surrogate kids as. There should nevertheless be expressed grounds which are doing the kids to be in the Foster places because most of the kids are in no danger while left at the attention of the parents. The United States foster attention system has nevertheless failed because it leaves some of the aged out young person s homeless and unemployed.it is the responsibility of the system to guarantee that they assist the aged out young person in accomplishing some stableness and if non so the footing of the system will be questionable

The visual presentation of the dish is important. Physician Assisted Suicides Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Physician Assisted Suicides - Essay Example wal of the life-sustaining treatments or administering pain medication that will hasten death through impairing critical body organ functions such as respiration (Jeffrey 73). The recent efforts of legalizing physician-assisted suicide have triggered intense medical, legal and social debates on whether physicians must be granted the authority to assist patients to intentionally end their lives. Physicians have a professional responsibility of respecting the patient’s choice and thus assisted suicide will enable the patient’s escape the pain and suffering in case of terminal illnesses (Jeffrey 68). Furthermore, a well-regulated assisted suicide practice will eliminate the slippery slope and ensure proper decision-making in assisting the patients commit suicide. The paper is addressed to health care policy makers that are tasked with offering guidelines on physician-assisted suicides in different parts of the country on how standardized physician-assisted suicide will be beneficial to the health care sector. The paper will discuss the arguments that have been put forward for and against physician-assisted suicide. The paper will make a conclusion on why the federal government should consider legalizing and regulating the practice since it is beneficial for patients suffering from extreme suffering due to life-threatening illnesses. Thesis statement: the federal government should legalize physician-assisted suicide I believe the federal government should legalize physician-assisted suicide in order to eliminate the terminal pain and suffering experienced by patients suffering from acute diseases. Although many physicians claim that they have the professional responsibility of preserving life and enhancing health care even for the terminally ill patients, the physicians have the knowledge and skills to assess the hopelessness situations of some patients and thus should assist them in committing suicide rather than leaving the patient undergo unbearable suffering

BHS 427 Health Care Finance (Module 2SLP) Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

BHS 427 Health Care Finance (Module 2SLP) - Essay Example which can be determined for a product. Indirect cost, on the other hand, includes factory overhead and similar cost elements that cannot be assigned to a specific product or service. In process costing, the cost for each product is not calculated. Instead, the costs are calculated for an entire batch, or service provided for the entire month. This way, it is easier and cheaper to calculate the costs rather than to attempt to determine costs for each unit of output; however, the costs calculated can be used to determine average costs for each unit. The process costing technique, thus, is inherently inaccurate. Process costing technique is most suitable for industries with similar types of products or services produced in an assembly like fashion. In health care industry, although it can be argued that patients usually have similar problems (after all, all are human beings) and require similar treatment. However, the treatment does not follow a fixed approach (for example, not all patients suffering with influenza are recommended the same medicine). The treatment differs based on patients' past history, allergies to certain medicines and other factors. Thus it may not be practicable to implement process costing technique in the health care industry. Job order costing differs from process costing in the way it captures costs. In contrast to process costing method, job order costing method calculates costs of each job instead of an entire process. For instance, using job order costing method, a company can determine the cost of fixing doors to an automobile assembly. Using the process costing method, the cost of entire process (assembling the automobiles with all parts) would be calculated instead. Job order costing is usually used for one-time, unique, or specially ordered products. To calculate job order cost, the direct costs are taken based on actual values whereas the indirect costs are computed as a percentage of direct material or direct labor consumption towards the job. Job Order Costing for Health Care Industry The job order costing for health care industry may take the form of identifying and calculating cost of fixing a new tooth within the overall dental checkup process at a dentist clinic. However, the application of job order costing in health care, though can be thought of, but are somewhat limited due to the nature of activities involved in health care industry. Activity Based Costing Activity based costing technique calculates costs based on actual consumption. This is carried out by identifying activities that are required to be undertaken to manufacture a product or to provide a service, and then identifying the actual costs that are incurred to complete these activities. The cost of the entire product or service is thus calculated. Activity Based Costing in Health Care Industry Activity based costing accurately provides the actual cost incurred on a product/ service; and thus it is widely used in industry nowadays. This is the main reason why health care industry uses activity based costing model to calculate costs of providing health care services. Prior to implementing this model in health care

In 2010, the RevPAR of hotel in Mexico has 29.5% increased that compared with 2009 and it reached to 67.47 U.S. dollars. Globalization Economy In recent year, the world multi polarization and economic globalization develop become more faster. To facing the opportunities and challenges which are brought by economic globalization, Mexico tries to seek the profit, open wider to the outside world and it actives to cooperate with the other countries in the world. In the tide of globalization, Mexico firmly grasp the opportunity, early in 1992, Mexico sign up the North American Free Trade Agreement with United States and Canada, it comes into being 360 million consumers and the annual gross national product in Mexico is more than six trillion U.S. dollars in the world and it become the largest free trade area in the world. Mexico tries to utilize the advances technology and huge market in United States and Canada, to develop the export oriented enterprises. Otherwise, Mexico is mainly to focus on the foreign trade to promote economic development. This action can improve the Mexicos competitiveness in the international market and increase the foreign trade. According to Mexican government statistics, the Mexican foreign trade export volume is increased to 117.5 billion U.S. dollars in 1998 and the foreign trade export volume is 298.36 billion U.S. dollars in 2010. To compare the export volume in 2009, it has 29.8% increases in Mexico. Mexico is continued to maintain the biggest exporter status in Latin America. Until now, Mexico signed the Free Trade Agreement in twelve times and its involved with 44 countries in the world. These agreements constitute a multilateral trade network for the Mexico economy and it is a benefit for the competition in the globalization of trade and it offers more opportunities to develop in Mexico. However, the globalization economy also poses a challenge in Mexico. As Mexico is over reliance on the export trade, the outbreak of the Mexican financial crisis in 1994 make the negative GDP growth of 6.2% in Mexico and the inflation rate as high as 52% and there were 70 billion U.S. dollars economic loss. In 1997, the economy was also affect by the Asian and Russian financial crisis. Otherwise, globalization has made Mexico over dependent on the U.S. economy, the domestic polarization between rich and poor did not improve and it has made the trade in competition with the industrialized countries are still in a passive position. To enhance the ability to prevent and withstand risks, Mexican governments increase the opening to the outside world and cooperate with more international countries, Mexican government also encourage businesses to participate in the competition and strengthen their own protection. Otherwise, Mexican government is also accord to rectify the financial system, improve the laws of economic and the establishment of risk prevention mechanism to overcome the negative effects of globalization. Sustainability Economy Most of developing countries that are facing a big challenge that is millions of people are living in poverty such as Indonesia, India, China, Brazil and Mexico also. It is a relevant problem for the sustainable economy in Mexico. The policies of sustainability in Mexico in not only help the people to recover the acute fiscal crisis; it is also helpful to solve the most entrenched human problems. 1. Gain the competitiveness Mexico needs to increase more competitive on the world economy. Renovating the economy in Mexico is based on sustainable principles; it is mainly to focus on the effective use of resources. It is helpful to attract the talent and investment form the other countries and make the economy in Mexico become more important and stable. 2. Resources and environment protection As helping the poverty population and increase the profit are only a part of sustainable development that the main mission in sustainable development is decreasing the effects of global warming. Because of the poor and development countries are the most affected by global warmings disastrous effects such as flood and drought. For the example, Mexico suffered its worst drought and worst flood in 70 years in 2009. Otherwise, the protection of natural resources and environment in Mexico are also important. As the tourism industry is the third biggest industry in Mexico, because of this reason, protecting and keeping the resources and environment healthy is extremely important for the Mexican government and the Mexico economy. Elements affect Mexico Economy Crime The crime problem in Mexico is a large problem that is the most affective in Mexico economy and foreign investment. In 2008, there were more than 3000 people had been killed by the kidnapping, murder and the other organized crime in Mexico and 2700 people had been killed in 2007. Otherwise, the inflation problem made the low income families in Mexico had been going on strikes and demonstrations for several weeks in 2008, the middle class are also join the protest because of the frequent violence problems and they are usually targeted by criminals in Mexico. Because of the deteriorating of crime and security in Mexico, it may increase 5% to 10% cost in the companys operating. It may undermine the competitiveness of enterprises, reduce the employment opportunities and hinder the development of the national economy. In addition, the social environment is not stable in Mexico will also affect the confidence of foreign investors. Pollution The pollution in Mexico is famous in the world. Because of the rapid development of economy in Mexico, there are most of plants are uncontrolled to built around the capital in Mexico, in addition, because of the religious reasons that is oppose any contraceptive measures, it makes the population and the demand of car are increase, for this reason to lead the air pollution problem in Mexico. Air pollution problems in Mexico stem from the industrial and geographical factors, which includes: Due to the high altitude and low oxygen, fuel is not easy to burn and release the pollution substances. The destruction of forest land and available resources. Automotive significant increase in emissions. In 2010, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that makes a large scales of water pollution. Most of fishes, birds, marine life and even plants are affecting by the oil spill, it also makes a large affect for the fishing industries. Climate The climate in Mexico is not much difference in four seasons. But it is so unlucky that there are flood and drought in Mexico in 2009 and it is mainly depend on the problems of global warming. The drought in Mexico made more than 1.16 billion U.S. dollars in agricultural losses in 2009. Because of the unstable climate, it may affect the economy growth and the foreign investment. In 2010, there has a climate conference which is locate in Mexico and it is mainly to find out the solutions to prevent the global warming with other countries. S.W.O.T. analysis Strengths As Mexico is one of the most important economic hubs in Latin American and it is connect with America. The economy in Mexico is a free market economy with modern industries and agriculture. The Government in Mexico has implemented the privatization of economic and it is also encourage competition in the harbor, electricity, railway, gas and airport services etc. Because of the market in Mexico is open for the countries, it can attract more investors to open their industries and investment. Otherwise, Mexico is located near America that is easy to trade with American industries. Otherwise, the government in Mexico has sign North American Free Trade Agreement that can be easier to cooperate with the other countries and increasing the foreign investment. Weaknesses Because of the economy in Mexico is over reliance on the America, it may affect the trade in competition with the industrialized countries are still in a passive position. Otherwise, the open market in Mexico is easy to have the phenomenon of monopoly and oligopoly. It is happen in a variety of industries such as the telecommunications. As the large company controls the telecommunications industry, it may decrease the competitiveness and finally it may affect the economy in Mexico. Moreover, the problem of monopoly is also leaded the wealth gap problem and widening the income gap. As there are more than 100 million people in Mexico, but it is nearly half of people are the poor households. Because the rich persons control the political and economic in Mexico, the resulting is the poor do not have opportunities to development. Otherwise, the monopolies of rich people are also decrease the competitiveness and the foreign investment in the market in Mexico. Opportunities As Mexico is a free market economy, every investors are also have chance to invest and build their company in Mexico. In these few years, Mexican government is welcome the foreign investors and the government actively promote the industries on automobile, electronic, aerospace, the semi conductors and other high tech industries. In addition, the President in Mexico Calderon has been calling for investment in the public transport, expansion of port and airport, natural gas and power plant construction etc for the local investors. Because of the good location and the low labor cost, it is an opportunity for the investment and its easier to expand into new market in Mexico. But the problem of wealth gap leads the unemployment, crime and social security problems. Threats According to the research, there is 5.5% economic growth in Mexico in 2010. The economic recovery in America is also boost the growth of exports in Mexico. Although Mexicos economy become to reduce the reliance on foreign markets, but the economic growth in America and the Europe countries are still to be a threats and it may affect the growth of economic development in Mexico. Otherwise, the problems of crime and climate are still the large threats which may affect the growth of domestic economy and the confidence of foreign investments. Is Mexico fit for investment? As Mexico is one of the most important countries in Latin America and it is also open the market for the foreign investment, we are according to the PESTLE and analysis the economy environment then we find out the answer. Mexico is fit for investment. Although Mexico is facing most of problems such as crime, pollution and climate and it is also over reliance on the America economy, but the government is already has find out some solution to innovate their own problems. For the long term view, Mexic

Dating Methods Essay -- essays papers

General Differances Between Relative and Absolute Dating Methods Getting dates for fossils that are found in sites being excavated by anthropologist is very important. Dates show the evolution from early hominid specimens to our own species, Homo homo sapiens. There are many methods that can be used to acquire these dates, but all of these methods fall into one of two catorgories. They can either give a absolute date or a relative date. An absolute date is one in which you get an actual date in years. Also known as chronometric methods. Relative dates do not give an actual date in terms of years, but they tell you if one fossil is older or younger than another fossil. Ushally relative dates are given in terms of the column of earth they are found in. This is called striatigraphy. In sites like Olduvai gorge their are geological layers of vocanic ash and sediment. When a anthropologist finds a fossil in a undistirbed layer of gray ash, you know that it is younger than the fossil in the layer of red ash below, and that fossil is younger than the fossil in the layer of brown ash below it.(Johanson 65) The basic theory here is that a certian site cantians a geolgical column key that is made up of differant strata layers, the fossils get older as they move down the key, and are found in differant layers of strata..(Scully 2) Relative dates have a couple of major problems. One is that the earth moves in many ways and this can distrube the layers of sediment putting younger fossils below older ones. Another is that you can not tell exactly how much younger or older something is from somethinng else and you can not date differant fossils from differant sites with thes relative dating methods. Absolute dating, unlike realative dating, gives the anthropologist an exact date in terms of calander years. These dating methods are much more reliable and can be used in many differant sites with many differant fossils. Absolute dating bases it’s dates on the natural radioactivity of differant elements found in the world.(Johnston 216) There are certian elements that occur in differant forms, these elements are called isotopes. Each one of these isotopes has a differant atomic mass than others. Some of thes isotopes are radioactive, meaning that they give of radiation in either alpha or beta form, as they de... ... has a half-life. C14 is the radioactive isotope of rearular carbon, c12. The cocentration of C14 in the body is one billionth of a gram in the body to one gram of C12. This C14 is contantly decaying, but through animals and plants breathing it is replenashed when an organism is alive. When the animal dies the C14 intake stops and a decay that is not replenashed.(Comas 456) During life an organism have a specific activity of 15.6 disintigrations per minuate per gram of regular carbon in thier body.(Comas 456) â€Å"After life and C14 intake cease and the equilibrium is halted, radioactive disintigration of C14 occurs, and after 5,700 years this activity will have decreased to 7.8 disintigratuions per minuate per gram of carbon in the body.’(Comas 457) This means that the ratio of C14 to C12 left in the fossil when it is found can give a date in years. Carbon-14 dating has a half-life of 5,700 years, with the lower limit of 1,000 years. The upper limit used to be about 30,000 years because after that the ratio was too small to analis. Recently reaserch by Haring and deVires has let scientist put the upper limit at 100,000 years old.(Comas 457)

Myth and Thomas Jefferson Essay

Essay: Topic: Compare and Contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address† (Chapter 15 in Readings in United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, (Chapter 14 in Readings in United States History) â€Å"Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.† (By Thomas Jefferson). Thomas Jefferson, who was born on April 13 1743 and died on July 4 1826, was the son of a wealthy uneducated planter from Western Virginia. He was the first to go to College in his family and he attended the College of William and Mary. He was dreaming about a society where men would be judged by what they have accomplished and by their taste .He was the third president of the United States of America (From 1801 to 1809) and also the first United States Secretary of State (From 1790 to 1793 ).He was much more: founder of the University of Virginia. Philosopher, cofounder of the oldest political party in the nation, coauthor of the Declaration of Independence. In this essay, we are going to compare and contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address† (Chapter 15 in Readings in United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, (Chapter 14 in Readings in United States History). In his book â€Å"The Jefferson image in the American Mind (1960), the writer Merrill Peterson is basically showing how American’s people see Thomas Jefferson. They have always seen him as a particular man, a symbol for the United States of America .Therefore, many people took their time to find out something wrong about that man. The man who started criticizing him as probably the writer Leonard Levy’s in his Book â€Å"Jefferson and Civil Liberties: The Darker Side†. In Chapter 14 â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, Gordon Wood really talks about Jefferson’s personal life. Thomas Jefferson is described as someone who had passion for partisan persecution, someone who didn’t care about the civil liberties,  someone who thought he was morally perfect and used to judge people around him. In the chapter, they are comparing him to his friend James Madison. Thomas Jefferson wasn’t thinking about the country like Madison when he was taking decisions. While taking his decisions, he was mostly concerned about what his French friends would think of it than the needs of the American population. The main portion of Jefferson’s life, was his fight to abolish slavery. As it is written in this chapter, Thomas Jefferson hated slavery. He worked really hard to eradicate it in New Western territories. But apparently, he was never able to set all his slaves free. Many recent historians claimed that Jefferson’s acting toward Black people was very disgusting, revolting. Especially for someone who claimed that he wanted to eradicate slavery. During his life, he wanted to make sure that the eradication of slavery will be accompanied by the deportation of Back people of the country. For him, Black people living in a white’s man America was totally unbearable. He was â€Å"Racist†. In his mind, Black men were extremely inferior to White Not only in Body but also in mind. People were surprised to see hear him talk about freedom and control Black slaves at the same time. Most people started to think that he was a hypocrite. In 1802, James Callender, a political pamphleteer and journalist pointed the fat that Tomas Jefferson maintained Sally Hemings a Black Slave as a mistress and fathered her with various children. This was barely believable because everybody knew him as a man who always suppressed his passions. In addition to that, Thomas Jefferson was a man of the eighteenth century, an intelligent man, conventional, and enlightened. But he also had his own weaknesses. Jefferson was fully part of the Enlightenment in the United States of America. His desire to know everything and his open-minded character put him on the top of the American Enlightenment. Unlike in Chapter 14 (Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson), Chapter 15 (First Inaugural Address, 1801) is basically Thomas Jefferson’s speech which marks the abolition of one of the worst period in the United States of America. The First Inaugural Address of Thomas Jefferson is lionizing the most important election in the history as Thomas Jefferson was succeeding to John Adams as president. During 1790s, some divisions were created between the Federalists (Hamilton and Adams) and the Republicans (Jefferson and Madison) due to the opposition to Hamilton’s financial policies and polemics over foreign policy. Thomas Jefferson was  the first President to take office in the new capital city of Washington. In his speech, Thomas Jefferson says â€Å"Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.† He is basically telling his Fellow-Citizens that even though there are some differences, both Federalists and Republicans are serving the same constitution and following the same principles. What is different is the way each of them interprets and apply it. He is calling for Union. Jefferson wants a government when no one will injure another; where each citizen will work. In his partisanship, the First Inaugural of Jefferson mingles the American past of Washington and some heroes into his different principles .By making his party’s victory a victory for all the country, the speech sets the standard for inaugural addresses. In Conclusion, we were ask to compare and contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Address† (Chapter 15 in Readings of the United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson† (Chapter 14 in Readings of the United States History). We can undoubtedly say that Thomas Jefferson was a great Leader. It is therefore all the more important to see and distinguish where he had success and also where he failed. Whenever something is great, people will always try to find out the Bad in it and that’s what happened to Thomas Jefferson. But it doesn’t change anything to what he has accomplished for the United States of America. Till today, no other figure in the American history as reached that standard.

The group is trying to exist in an ever-changing modern world that threatens the existence of their being. Themes The film has a number of themes well intricate and complemented the other. Two themes stand out and are evidently portrayed by the cast as well by the movies directors efforts. Critics of the movie agree that the movie’s theme of a gang of outlaws that is increasingly threatened with extinction. The film seeks to take the theme of violence and has attracted supports and critics alike (‘’The Wild Bunch’). Another theme that is clearly portrayed by the movie’s plot is the theme of betrayal. The culture of propagating violence in films has been practised for ages. This has generated  the notion that a film would only sell and make it to the box office best films of the year if a sexual or violent theme is showcased in the movie.  The characters in the film are seen to suffer from the realization of betrayal. Betrayal in many forms and present in a very intriguing manner. This is seen in the betrayal of a friend and as well as leaving the said friend to the fate, that be falls him. The screenplay is set to follow the intrigues of the Wild Bunch group members. The members of this group are followed right from the members disastrous lives coupled with the members’ experiences that has over time brought the group members no gain. The members end up in a very sadistic state. Although the film is set on a great background and the movie sequence is exceptional including the beautiful well thought of landscapes. Although the movie is set many years ago, four decades ago, the same kind of themes are still propagated in films to date. The personal relationships of the characters in the film are played out as very perverted relationships with an extraordinary twist of never ending greed as well as lust (Canby 5). Today’s modern movie culture is not any different from the 1969 movie culture as movies of today still bear the same themes. The themes of love, betrayal, lust, violence are still evident in today’s movie culture. Critic The movi e, The Wild Bunch, is noted for its intricate, multiple angle editing while at the same time using normal and slow motion images. The violence in the film stirred a lot of public outrage then just as it is to date. The film’s director Sam Pekinpah once sought to compare the films violence to the then American war in Vietnam. The director further notes that the said war was televised all over America during families meal times (Spiegal 6). The film was on the public lips for long because of the film’s graphic and bloody violence. The film gave a picture of men who would use and crude weapon as long as it sustained their survival. The movie has also been criticiz ed by feminists alike in the films depiction of women in a degrading manner. The idea of using women as shields in the film has been severely criticized. This in a film that is dominantly male has been criticized. In the modern culture, films that stir up a lot of public outrage are still released year in year out. Today’s culture has seen an upsurge in the production and release of what can be said to be controversial films in an effort  generate publicity for the films. This kind of publicity works to create interest in the movies which in turn pushes the number of movie sales tickets and so on that in turn boosts revenues for film industry players. Awards Directors of the film were nominated for best Screenplay Academy Award, the music director was a nominee for best original score. The film’s director earned a nomination for the Outstanding Director Achievement Award by the Guild of America and the cinematographer won the Natural Society of Film critics award (Sp iegal 5). Conclusion The film is unrelenting in its quest to tell the tales of the the group members comradeship on one hand as well as the tales of friendship (Spiegal 2). The film tells a story of gang members who are bound together by a well-guided code of honour amongst the gang members and their stories of being outlaws hence the film’s title ‘’ The Wild Bunch ‘’ The film as contrasted to other films of its times and those set in the same background such as the movie, The Proposition. The film is set on the background against the difficult and tasking terrain of the   olden days. Both movies in their own way tell of a tale of visually stimulating as well as stunning tale of loyalty of a group of members. Both plots of the films are about revenge, conquest as well as pursue justice in what is largely seen as a lawless state. The film is brutal just as it is unflinching even though with very violent scenes it stirs a thought provoking process ac companied by brilliant performances. This kind of movie story lines are still clearly evident in today’s movie industry.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Wild Bunch Movie specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The Wild Bunch is a movie that still continues to influence today’s movie culture in terms of content as well as themes and character roles in the film industry. Today’s modern culture has embraced technology in the production process to enhance the quality of the films produced. The technology embraced ensures that the sound as well as picture effects are clearly and precisely made to perfection while still trying to retain aspects seen in olden days films and still retaining the same effect on the audience of both cultures. CJD

CJD Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) originates from an infectious agent that infected sheep, which crossed the species barrier to bovines to cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy, then eventually was acquired by humans. Changes in the rendering of livestock carcasses allowed the pathogen to survive and contaminate meat and bone meal in livestock feed, amplifying infection to epidemic proportions. Export of contaminated meat and bone meal and live cattle incubating the disease caused the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to other countries. Bovine spongiform encephalopathy caused variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease that entered into the human food chain. CJD is a disease primarily affecting the nervous system. Worldwide it affects one out of 1 million people, most between 50 and 70 years of age. A marker of the disease is an abnormal protein called a prion that accumulates in the brain of people who have CJD. Transmission of CJD between people is rare, and the agent that causes th e disease is thought not to be highly contagious.Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), typical ...

Economics 1- General Motors - Essay Example he question directly, the cost structure of the combined entities, as General Motors, improved after the mergers, with the trimming of costs and improving profit margins even when the level of revenues remains constant. Economies of scale is possible only with a certain minimum critical size of firms in an industry such as the automobile industry. The company continued its acquisition binge in the ensuing years. Management decisions that improved operations included reduction of costly factory errors with the establishment of a testing laboratory, and setting up of facilities for research and development, which turned out to be the most complex in the industry at the time. These contributed to improved efficiency and productivity. During the 1920s the big car manufacturers were GM and Ford, followed by Chrysler in 1925 (American Motors was formed only in 1954). At that time only Ford posed a semblance of competition to GM. GM proceeded with some major innovations in management systems using policy coordination from the top, policy direction through top-level committees, and delegation of responsibilities - practices that were to become standard in business management theory and practice. In the late 1920s, GM introduced the synchromesh gears by Cadillac, the shatter-proof safety glass, and the V-16, the first car type with a 16-cylinder engine, setting standards in power and performance. Then it pioneered in innovations in styling and engineering, capped by the discovery of the automatic gear. GM also developed the independ4ent front wheel suspension and the automatic transmission under Sloans leadership before the WWII. In the 1950s GM introduced the V-8 engine with a higher compression ratio, power steering , air-conditioning systems, safety belts, among others. In short, the company outdistanced its competition through design and engineering as demonstrated in the functional quality of cars it produced. In the area of marketing strategy, GM boss Sloans

According to him he felt that a an owner of a house has needs and that is why a house should a machine for living. It contains the unique artwork which is related to church designs and trefoil shapes. Generally the upper back portion of the chairs is very similar the church designs and the carvings are similar to the gothic architecture. Still room was generally found in castles and large establishment in the medieval times. It was used as a distillery room and was connected to the kitchen. The room was mainly used to baking, preparing drinks and jams and the lady of the house of in charge of it. The two new rooms that were introduced during the Victorian era were the billiards room and the smoking room. Billiards room as the name suggests should not be confused with the game of billiards, rather the room was used as a place of entertainment. The smoking room was a place where men would often retire after their supper. In the earliest times, glass was considered a precious material and was so highly valued that it was only used by the wealthiest families as their windows. It started becoming more popular during the 14th century and was developed to make flat window glasses. The French glass blowers developed it for the first time and it was called the crown glass. This made it possible for house owners to start using glass for their windows. The Victorian Era was considered the time often fakes due to one particular reason. The faux fireplace was the reason behind it. When the parlor stoves became a common way to heating a room, they were most of time place in front of an existing fireplace.
